The men’s race winner Margus Ader (Estonia) took the lead from the very beginning thanks to the strong skiing. His flawless – 10 out of 10 – shooting performance guaranteed him the first prize. After the race Ader noted his «gold» is the highest biathlon award won by Estonia and he is infinitely happy to bring such a victory to his country.
The «Eurosport» commentator, Michael Dixon, settled for the silver only 11 seconds back. He also shot clean but was slower on the track.
The IBU photo chief Christian Manzoni displayed splendid speed but missed once on the shooting range. The penalty loop held him away from the race victory though he finished just 1 second behind Dixon.
In the women’s race the podium places were shared by three Russians. The «Sovetskii Sport» journalist Natalia Maryanchik showed the best time result despite not-so-perfect shooting. Later she informed she counted on her ski technique trying to finish the shooting as quickly as possible.
The RBU press – attaché Maria Baydina who claimed the silver medal used the opposite shooting tactics. She shot clean but skied slow which left her 3 minutes 12 seconds behind Maryanchik. After the results were announced the women’s mass-start winner shared her emotions: “I have become the winner of the first biathlon race in my sport career. That is amazing!”
«One may think biathlon is easy. But only having tried to cross the finish line yourself, you may understand what biathletes feel during the race. I cannot imagine how they manage to give interviews after races!», – Maria Baydina said.
The third place was captured by the World Championship 2011 Press-Centre journalist Anastasiya Chelyuskina finishing 6:05 back.
This time the famous athletes who came to Khanty-Mansiysk as sport experts, commentators and journalists did not participate in the race. But, according to the Ceremony Chief, EugeniRedkine, next year they will definitely take part in Mass Media Championships.
