Sergey Shilov: The main thing is not to lose yourself

On April 9 the Russian national team won gold on last meters of men relay at the World Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk.

How was the performance of your team today?

Kirill Mikhaylov: Guys took the lead from the first loop, so on the second one they only needed to win 36 seconds, that’s why I was rather calm.

Today the guide was running behind the athlete. Why so?

Andrey Tokarev: The relay itself is very difficult to run, besides, the weather is not so good the last few days. The team was far behind from the leader, and we took this decision. Moreover, Kolya skis faster.

How often do you use such techniques?

Nikolay Polukhin: Usually, it depends on the situation. We change if it’s necessary, so Andrey leads me running behind. Today we decided so from the very beginning. We needed a really high speed, as the coaches told us before starting that we had to win time back. Now I’m very happy for our victory!

Sergey, what do you think about today’s performance? Did you have any difficulties on the track?

Sergey Shilov: Everything was ok, except the snow which was extremely hard to run. I had a task not to lose more than 2.5 minutes to the Norwegian team; otherwise it would be difficult to win time back. I understand that such a technique is not clear for the fans, but it helped us to win.

Were you planning to participate in the relay?

Sergey Shilov: We had two well-prepared teams, which were equally strong. Depending on the weather conditions and snow, our coaches chose one of them.

Which results are you expecting from the tomorrow’s biathlon competition?

Sergey Shilov: This is sport, so we need to show our level. The main thing is not to lose yourself.
